To know the desire of our heart can be difficult. There are many things we each would love to have or see take place, but where do most of our wants come from and why do we want them? Do we desire things out of need, loneliness, ambition, necessity or dreams? Is it possible that our true desires could come from a deeper place? A place not much thought about or talked about, our soul. Maybe our deepest longings our driven by an emptiness beyond ourselves. Maybe there’s a spiritual longing that needs to be filled before we can really be content.
What does scripture say about finding our heart’s desire?
Psalm 37:4 NIV Take delight in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.
Psalm’s say He will give us the desires of our heart if we delight, take great pleasure in, find enjoyment and happiness in the Lord. Do we know how to do that? Some would say, is that even a thing?
So how do we take delight in the Lord? Here are a few suggestions:
- Begin to enjoy the Lord Jesus by spending time in the Bible and in prayer. Yep, I even talk to him during the day. I ask His Holy Spirit to come and help me write, get through things, teach me what God’s word means, and just be with me as I pray and be still. See John 14:26. Those times with the Lord are rejuvenating and yes delightful if my heart is open to the Holy Spirit.
- Begin to enjoy His Creation. To me that’s the easiest way to be with the Lord because I see him in it. It’s my favorite place to be. I am amazed by how beautiful and perfect a flower can be, or how good a vegetable or fruit can taste. The sites and sounds of nature bring me so much joy. I would have to say it’s more than a delight, it is one thing my heart longs for. One of the desires of my heart for sure, would be to travel and see all the wonders God has made. Romans 1:20
- Begin to enjoy the Lord’s provision. What is provision? The things we need to survive, our home, food, water, transportation etc. Many think it all comes from their own hard work but God at one time or another enabled us the ability to make money and start providing for ourselves. A person can belabor this point but we were created by God and I believe He is responsible for what we are able to get or achieve. Philippians 4:19 Psalm 128:2
- Begin to enjoy the fellowship of other believers. For me it is such a joy to be with like minded people where you can be free to express yourself and enjoy the company of others. They are God given gifts from Heaven, a blessing from the Lord for us to enjoy. Hebrews 10:25 NKJV
- Begin to grasp how deep and wide the Love of God is for human kind and make it a priority to accept this grace and love. It will bring you much peace and joy to be in this relationship with our Father in Heaven. John 3:16, Romans 8:15-16, 1 John 3:1 Romans 10:9
I know God plants dreams and desires in our heart, it’s part of our make-up. Musicians are driven to make music; artist are driven to create and so forth. So many of our desires are in our DNA and some come from our spiritual and physical needs.
When we are able to delight in the Lord, He seems to give our hearts desires to us by opening doors easily and creating a path to them maybe a little easier than other people. The one thing I do know is, when we are blessed with some of the desires of our heart, and we are able to delight in the Lord, we are also able to live in a state of perpetual thankfulness. Gratitude is the best attitude for it is positive and life affirming. So, whether we live in want or plenty, our attitude will chart our course of how we will live our life and what we will seek to find. I pray you seek to delight in the Lord.
God never denies us our hearts desire except to give us something better. Elizabeth Elliot
Prayer
Lord, may we find great joy in being with you. May all our desires be your desires for us and may we find fulfillment there. Fill us with the love and gratitude that comes from you so we can live a life full of satisfaction and purpose. Grant the true desires of our heart Lord, as we strive to live for you. In Jesus’ name, amen.
God bless,
